A chance meeting and a wedding in Essex…

I loved shooting the wedding below. Why? Quite simply, this is one of the nicest couples I have ever had the privilege to shoot – they and their guests are what made this wedding great.  I actually met the bride on the train – an overheard snatch of conversation bemoaning the fact they hadn’t found a wedding photographer they liked to cover their big day. One ‘Excuse me, here’s my card’ and an apology for earwigging (of course), a cup of tea at their house (they make a great cup of tea) to discuss plans and there we were, ready to photograph their wedding day.

On the day itself, Waltham Abbey in Hertfordshire and flowers and bridal preparations were my first stop.  Then it was across the border to Epping in Essex to meet with the groom and best man for a fun little pre-wedding shoot.  Afterwards it was back to Hertfordshire for a wedding breakfast and some fine speeches.

Family and baby portraits are always great fun to photograph and this latest shoot was no exception – two very relaxed parents and two great children, including the new baby.  Before I arrived I had approached Mum & Dad with a view to using a more documentary style on their shoot.  I wanted to capture real, honest moments as they happened with the whole family doing what they normally do.  I love those cutesy posed newborn shots that are so in vogue these days – but there is something about getting everyone involved and just capturing the normal everyday life of a family that is so much more involving for me.

This approach came about because when my own son was born, I really felt we missed out in some-ways – being new parents meant that more often than not other needs were more pressing than capturing the events surrounding us. Whilst we have some lovely baby photos, there are moments we simply missed and it would have been great to occasionally have someone to capture things as they happened, whilst we wrangled our newborn and got on with learning on the job.

This style of photography is, in my opinion, well suited to turning into either an album or book or a box of mounted prints – something tangible, telling the story as photographed.

Shooting family photographs on location is great – not only does it provide lots of interesting backgrounds to shoot portraits against whilst having some fun doing it, it also creates a connection between the subjects and the location, creating a tangible memory that is brought to life in the image and can be treasured forever.  Living right on the edge of London we are fortunate to have access to some great outdoor locations which we can use at any time of the year – and yet achieve markedly different results.

Both the following sets of family and children’s portraits were photographed at Trent Park, Enfield. The first set, of some lovely clients whose baby photographs I also took, were shot in December, just in time to be turned into fantastic framed prints as Christmas presents for Grandparents.

I was introduced to John and Sue at a winter wedding in Hertfordshire late last year (in fact I ate dinner with them during my down time) and was contacted by the bride’s daughter earlier this year to enquire if I would be interesting in capturing her mum’s forthcoming wedding in late June.  We met up again last weekend to complete our pre-wedding shoot and do some wedding planning – discussions of their day and a visit to the beautiful 12th century church where they will be getting married.  They chose to go to Stockgrave Country Park, near Leighton Buzzard – a place that holds some considerable sentimental value to them as it is where they first met.

Bridal portraits during your wedding are very special. They are all about style and elegance, capturing the grace of the wedding dress, alongside the beauty of the bride.

I recently had opportunity to capture some lovely bridal portraits during a test shoot at Ingatestone Hall, Essex.  In the first series, I think that what makes these images special is that our model, Deona is wearing her own wedding dress – she commented how much she enjoyed wearing it again. Portraits such as this can often be overlooked during the hustle and bustle of a wedding day. These portraits show just what can be achieved with just short period of time – just 10 or 15 minutes on your wedding day is enough to capture some beautiful bridal photographs before rejoining your guests, knowing you have captured some images that will last a lifetime.

For our second series, we moved outside with Jenny – again in her own beautiful dress with it’s flowing skirt to capture some figure in the landscape shots using the surroundings of our venue for the day.

Why the art of street photography is akin to reportage wedding photography: and why formal photographs can be a good thing

Every now and then I enjoy spending some time wandering around various parts of London observing my surroundings and the people within them.  Recently, I was due to meetup with some fellow wedding photographers in the evening, so thought to myself ‘why not spend a few hours pounding the pavements, watching the world go by and capturing some candid shots of life in London in 2011.’

Here are some of the results, all taken around Spitalfields, Shoreditch and Liverpool Street.

street photography is good practice for candid wedding photography

Taking candids on the street is excellent practice for weddings – you need to be quick to capture a fleeting moment before it has disappeared but at the same time need to retain an eye for composition and timing. Candid images like these are very relevant to modern wedding photography – many couples now shy away from very formal posed photographs and prefer to go for reportage style images. Personally, I like to strike a balance when shooting a wedding and make sure key formal setup shots of groups etc are captured. Not to say a wholly candid wedding is wrong, more to say ‘think ahead to the future,’ when the record of these groups of people not only might have sentimental value but also compliments the informal nature of the reportage wedding photographs. My approach to this therefore is to suggest that my couples think of several key posed group shots that they would like recorded, and then to capture these in a relaxed and fun manner, keeping the whole process short and sweet, allowing everyone to get on with the main purpose of the day – celebrating the wedding.

reportage capture of weddings is like street photography

I was contacted by this lovely couple through Facebook, having been at Uni with the groom about 12 years ago.  It was great to make his re-acquaintance and meet his future wife during their pre-wedding shoot, and an absolute delight to travel to shoot their intimate wedding last summer.  This was an international affair, with guests from Eastern Europe, Russia and the bride’s family making the trip all the way from Uzbekistan.  The day started off pretty normally (as weddings go) – the bride had found a fantastic vintage style wedding dress, there was a lovely vintage car. Later in the day saw some traditional Uzbek wedding costumes and food at the wedding reception. Here are a selection of my favourite photographs, telling the story of this couple’s lovely wedding day.

It was March, yet we were still being subjected to sub-zero temperatures (a far cry from today’s balmy April weather).  I met this lovely couple through a referral from a newborn portrait session I did for a friend of theirs last year, and we all met up one evening to talk wedding plans and get a few portraits prior to their wedding at Woburn Abbey later this summer.  We were very nearly thwarted by the weather – it was way too cold (or we were seriously underdressed) to stay out too long.Pre-wedding shoot prior to summer Woburn Abbey wedding
