Essex Wedding Photography: Dan and Lucy’s Stock wedding Part 1

You may remember Dan and Lucy from their engagement photographs at Hylands House, Chelmsford earlier this year. I have been itching to post the full set of images from Lucy and Dan’s wedding at All Saints church, Stock, Essex and party at Great Prestons for several weeks. However, an extended honeymoon for this lovely couple delayed me doing so – after-all the bride and groom have the privilege of seeing the images first.   So we go back in time slightly to early June. A bright summers day saw me capturing the bridal preparations, wedding dress and a gorgeous pair of Kurt Geiger shoes.

This was followed by a short drive through the lanes of Essex to Stock and the lovely All Saints Church to meet our groom and the rest of the wedding party awaiting the arrival of the bride.

The cool interior of the church provided some relief from the surprisingly hot sun and the light filtering through the windows was perfect for capturing some beautiful black and white photographs of the wedding ceremony.

A chance meeting and a wedding in Essex…

I loved shooting the wedding below. Why? I loved shooting the wedding below. Why? Quite simply, this is one of the nicest couples I have ever had the privilege to shoot – they and their guests are what made this wedding great.  I actually met the bride on the train – an overheard snatch of conversation bemoaning the fact they hadn’t found a wedding photographer they liked to cover their big day. One ‘Excuse me, here’s my card’ and an apology for earwigging (of course), a cup of tea at their house (they make a great cup of tea) to discuss plans and there we were, ready to photograph their wedding day.

On the day itself, Waltham Abbey in Hertfordshire and flowers and bridal preparations were my first stop.  Then it was across the border to Epping in Essex to meet with the groom and best man for a fun little pre-wedding shoot.  Afterwards it was back to Hertfordshire for a wedding breakfast and some fine speeches.

Family and baby portraits are always great fun to photograph and this latest shoot was no exception – two very relaxed parents and two great children, including the new baby.  Before I arrived I had approached Mum & Dad with a view to using a more documentary style on their shoot.  I wanted to capture real, honest moments as they happened with the whole family doing what they normally do.  I love those cutesy posed newborn shots that are so in vogue these days – but there is something about getting everyone involved and just capturing the normal everyday life of a family that is so much more involving for me.

This approach came about because when my own son was born, I really felt we missed out in some-ways – being new parents meant that more often than not other needs were more pressing than capturing the events surrounding us. Whilst we have some lovely baby photos, there are moments we simply missed and it would have been great to occasionally have someone to capture things as they happened, whilst we wrangled our newborn and got on with learning on the job.

This style of photography is, in my opinion, well suited to turning into either an album or book or a box of mounted prints – something tangible, telling the story as photographed.
