Family and baby portraits are always great fun to photograph and this latest shoot was no exception – two very relaxed parents and two great children, including the new baby. Before I arrived I had approached Mum & Dad with a view to using a more documentary style on their shoot. I wanted to capture real, honest moments as they happened with the whole family doing what they normally do. I love those cutesy posed newborn shots that are so in vogue these days – but there is something about getting everyone involved and just capturing the normal everyday life of a family that is so much more involving for me.
This approach came about because when my own son was born, I really felt we missed out in some-ways – being new parents meant that more often than not other needs were more pressing than capturing the events surrounding us. Whilst we have some lovely baby photos, there are moments we simply missed and it would have been great to occasionally have someone to capture things as they happened, whilst we wrangled our newborn and got on with learning on the job.
This style of photography is, in my opinion, well suited to turning into either an album or book or a box of mounted prints – something tangible, telling the story as photographed.
